2007 60 hp Mercury Bigfoot EFI. Are electronic fuel ignition and direct fuel ignition the same thing? The reason why I ask is because I might need to remove direct fuel ignition coils to access the spark plugs in my 2007 60 hp Mercury Bigfoot . The manual I bought says that in an engine with direct fuel ignition, I need to unbolt and remove the coils before I remove spark plugs. I personally think they're the same thing - electronic fuel ignition and direct fuel ignition but I don't want to unbolt parts that are irrelevant to the spark plug removal process if I don't need to.

You're all confused. First off, it's "fuel injection" and yes, direct and indirect are two different things, neither of which have anything to do with spark plugs.
Your motor may have "coil on plug" ignition, which is a small coil sitting on top of each spark plug. If that is the case, then yes, you''ll need to remove the coil to replace the plugs. The setups I have seen are no more difficult than removing a spark plug boot - very simple.

Thank you. I've never seen spark plugs hidden by other hardware, in this case the coils. So I will unbolt the coils and remove the plugs. That's easy enough. I really appreciate your quick response.
