I repowered my 1983 Montauk with a 90 HP ETEC purchased new in 2007. Great engine!!
I have not replaced the anodes until this season (2016) as they are have been very solid. I managed to snap the head off the bolt holding the gearcase anode, part number 436745. I would like to drill some pilot holes into the anode about 1/3 from the top of the anode. This will enable me to break off the top of the anode & then push the attached broken bolt through the mounting hole.
Appreciate any feedback on the following 2 questions
Question1: Is this the best way to remove the old anode, especially with the broken bolt head?
I did purchase an Evinrude replacement part as mentioned above by part number. I was told the new bolt would self-thread into the hole through the anode. Fat chance of that, especially trying to start the bolt while holding the anode in place. I have the correct thread diameter on a tap.
Question2: Is it standard procedure to tap a thread in the shaft hole within the anode? Should the thread be long enough for the bolt, or, due to vibrations, should I leave some bare material for the bolt to thread into?
Advice is much appreciated & respected!!
Thanks - Steve

You will need to drill the broken threaded portion of the bolt with an over sized bit to reduce the clearance so you can remove the anode. Be careful not to let the bit make contact with the painted surface.
Yes, Definitely tap the hole in the new anode for ease of assembly - 5/16-18 NC. Put a touch of Triple-Guard grease on the bolt threads if you boat in saltwater.
