I recently purchased a 13' Whaler SSL with a Yamaha 40HP. It dosen't seem to want to trim at high speeds. Does the power trim/tilt have enough pwer to overcome the forces at higher speeds?

The trim tilt should operate at any speed.

Are you trying to trim the bow up or the bow down.
Up should be easy as the water wants to push the engine trim up due to the drag.

If you are trying to trim the engine in, or down, then your trim system may be weak...

I'm having the exact same problem on my 13' with a 1992 yamaha 40. At WOT if i quickly let of I can trim it up a bit and then back to WOT. I think Joe is right it should operate at any speed. I will let you know what i find out.

There is a difference between the trim and the tilt. The tilt range is for raising the motor to load the boat on a trailer or mooring the boat with the lower unit out if the water and sometimes for shallow watre operation at idle speed. The tilt function will only work if there is no thrust load on it.

The tilt will change the angle of the motor only within a small range where on-plane performance can be affected. Because the 13 foot whaler has such a severe transom angle, the maximum trim-out limit is rather modest. If the boat is on plane, the tilt function may not be powerful enough to exceed this limit, nor would you want it to.

Joe,

No, the drag is NOT going to help trim the motor out because it is the propeller that is pushing the boat!

Tom,

You're right. I got it backwards.

A weak trim system should be able to trim the motor in, but because it might be weak, it may not be able to trim out or up.

It also dawned on me that some motors have "Tilt" only... They do not have trim...

The trim should work at any speed but as Tom mentioned, the tilt feature may not.
