Our 1999 Mercury is looking a bit faded but runs great. Any reason to not order the decals and pay the local body shop to pain the engine cover? Anything special we should do knowing that it is going to be subject to a marine environment?

Nothing wrong with that.
As with all painting, preparing the material for paint is key.

One coat of paint, decals then two coats of clear? What do you recommend? Thank you.

Let the body shop determine how to paint the cover, and number of coats, etc. Be sure to have them use Mercury Phantom Black. Generally decals should not be clearcoated over, but I would get that information from the decal company. The place I use does not recommend it.
These classic Mercs have been professionally repainted, and I did the new decal work. Clearcoating over the decals was not recommended.

Not sure how bad of shape your cover is in. a friend wanted me to repaint his mercury cover but i suggested we remove the decals and try sanding and buffing first. It looked good as new, then we applied new decals and it truly looked brand new.

Where did you get those decals with the "chrome"? The only ones I can find substitute silver.

There is a seller on eBay of the decals. Anyone have experience w/ the ebay seller and/or anyone else that makes quality decals?

I had mine done 3 years ago by a fellow in Sarasota. Twin 225's (1999). No clear coat was used and aftermarket decals applied. They turned out outstanding! Not cheap though... $300/per cowling... Included pick-up, prep, paint, new decals, and delivery.

I would go with Finnegan's source for decals and not online. And the source is.....?
E-Bay tends to have knock offs that are not right and/or poor quality.

Had my 1995 Johnson 130 professionally painted, clear coated and decaled. It looks as new. $300.00 for everything, however well worth it.

I would love to find someone that would do the work for that and have it look professional. Right now I have to get the engine running right first but having the engine look nice is the project I really want to get to...
