Hello everyone!! Need some guidance in a motor issue. I have a 1996 revenge with a HT (Hardtop), the boat weighs around 4000 LBS from the research that I can find. May weight may be a little lighter due to the sink and water tank being taken out by the previous owner.

The question is this; I have a friend that is selling a 2007 Evinrude 200HP it isn't the HO model so the displacement is 2.6L vs the 3.3L in the HO model. Minimum horsepower that can be used on the boat is 115 so I am assuming this will work. However, my question is to anyone that has experience with these boats and what size motors they use. I see a lot running a 225 HP motor which you got in the bigger block no matter what motor manufacturer you go with. I had twin 150 Johnsons that I pulled off which had a few hours on them (they were tired). Will I be over working the motor? Will it be fine? I am not looking for a speed demon just wanted to see what people think. He is offering me to run the motor and if I don't like the performance I can take it off and he will try to sell to someone else or just keep it for an extra since he does run a guide service.

How you like the motor will depend greatly on how it is rigged and propped.

It may take a few prop tests to get it where the boat performs well.

I figured I would start with a 17 pitch prop and go from there. I topped out at about 40 knots with the twins (17 pitch aluminum props) However, I don't believe the motors were set right because I had quite a bit of spray coming off of them. I am just not sure if the 200 small block would be overworking versus the big block motor. I could get is up on step with one of the 150 motors, it would be about 28 knots Wide Open Throttle.

But looking at your boat specs, it's hard to believe you will be happy with the 2.6L 200 hp engine. My boat (Outrage 19) weighs less than half of what yours does, and it runs on a 2.6L 150 hp engine. I have considered smaller engine options for repowering, but many experienced owners caution against downsizing the power rating of my engine. So it is difficult to see how your boat weighing more than double mine would perform to your satisfaction with an engine of the same displacement and with rated HP only 33% higher than mine.

I'm not saying you must replicate the 300 HP you currently have, but a single big block 225 or better still 250 HP engine is probably a smarter approach for the size and weight vessel you have.

Very true and everyone has made that point. Worst problem is that I am getting a super good deal on the motor, but he will allow me to try it out before any money is exchanged (excellent friend). I have seen many boats leave showroom floors weighing 4700lbs+ with twin 115's and a max hp of 450. They seem to perform fine. No complaints from the owners. Prop and position of the motor will play a major role. I am not sure about some of the inboard/outboard 25's either. I don't know what kind of horsepower those motors put out in relation to any outboards. I appreciate your time and info on the post. Keep them coming!!! The more the better!!

That is one swell friend you have to let you test the engine before buying it. As long as you are not pressed for time, I suppose why not give it a shot? I wish I could test a few sizes on my boat!

I'm sure we'll all be very interested to hear results, so please report back - this kind of data point is valuable to almost anyone considering a repower.

P.S. Thanks for the boat compliment. There are more than a few models loosely referred to as the Outrage 19 -- not sure which one your friends have but ours is the 19 Outrage II (same hull as classic Outrage 18.) We enjoy it very much. Cheers.

It seems to be 50/50 as far as specs go, how the motor will perform. But for matter of opinion most people want to go with the biggest horsepower possible (which is understandable). Seems to me no one has actually put a smaller block single on any of these boats and it is even harder because they are so hide to find anyways. For sure, I will just try it out and post back once I get the performance numbers.

Conyak, for what its worth I have a 22' Revenge (1979), that is probably a thousand pounds lighter than yours with a 225 hp Yamaha 2 stroke. I wish I had a little more power and I'd really appreciate the extra engine should I lose one. Especially if I were in Alaskan waters or offshore. Can't blame you for trying your friends engine though especially at no charge. Good luck!

Most seem to express that the small block 200 does not have any more torque than the small block 150, so if one 150 was enough, this will be a bit better for top speed, but not much better for holeshot. If it were mine, I'd wait for a big block 200HO as the minimum.

The Etec 200hp series is the same block as the 150hp and 175hp. They weigh about 100lb less than the Etec HO 200hp. Do you want to run a motor wide open for performance or get the bigger block and nurse it a hair more. My guess you are at the minimum horsepower for that boat with the small block. If it is a great deal....get it.....try it....wait for a larger size then flip it for what you have into it if you do not like it. The performance may very well be to your liking. I know of a Whaler owner who went with a single 250hp Honda for his 25' Guardian hull and added a 20hp kicker so he could scoot around and use the kicker to troll a little faster for tuna. Me....I hate to speed and prefer slower moving. Good luck. Might be worth the investment.

I I always assumed the 115 was for twins. I can't imagine anything less than 225. I have a 250 on my 25 outrage and it's a good setup
