Im trying to get motivated to have my whaler ready for the summer. I considered trying to re-do an original engine for my repower. However, all the lakes I frequest require 4 strokes.
Before I go out shopping (I cant find much for pricing online)... What are some real world numbers you have seen for a repower? Good places in Southern CA to buy one?
Ive read a lot on the benifits of the F70. Any other engines you guys have purchased that are comparable? Honda 60? I do want to stay under the 300lb mark.
What am I looking at with installation, cost of the outboard and throttle/ cables/ etc? Thank you!

I have never heard of any lakes like that in California.
Many require clean CARB3 rated motors but not 4 strokes only that I know of.
If so, please give us info on those lakes.
The 2 stroke E-Tec is a clean CARB3 rated motor and can be used on Lake Tahoe.
Every motor on this list is CARB3 rated and should be good on all lakes in the United States.

The Yamaha F70 is hard to beat if outright speed isn't necessary.
If someone wants more power for skiing, etc., then they would probably want a 90hp of which the E-Tec would be the lightest in that category.

Sorry, I stand corrected. What I should have written is... I cant use an old 2 stroke around here. Thank you Joe.
I agree, Im leaning towards the F70. Just trying to get an idea on real-world cost.

Prices vary greatly from one location to the next, so you probably will get a more accurate read from a local dealer.
I installed an F70 when they first came out and it was under $8K with controls, wiring for GPS connection, and tach. I did the install myself. At the time, the local Honda dealer wanted a lot more for their 60.
Prices peak at this time of year, unfortunately.

Maintenance and support for the motor should be taken into account. As an example....why buy a Yamaha motor for initial savings when all the local shops work on Honda or Etec.

How about a Bearcat?
Low cost, "original" 4 stroke option - in northern CA.
Economy 4-Cycle Marine offers a rebuilt motor exchange for $1695 with one year power head warranty! (there is a core available on another sight for $300)
If your not a speed demon it might be an option.

The Bearcat 55 hp outboard with a 20 inch shaft weighs @239 lbs.

Thank you all. Very interesting! The bearcat idea has me thinking.... Is that what they put on them back in the 60s?
Also, I found a brand new Honda 60 for $6200. Decisions, decisions...

I just repowered my '84 15 sport. Like you, I live in so cal and wanted a 4 stroke to get on those lakes with emissions requirements, hassle free and turn key operation! When I bought it, she had the original Johnson 70 2 stroke (247lbs). I'm not familiar with your particular model but assuming you're looking for the same motors I researched. I looked at the F70, Honda BF60, Etec 60 and Merc 60. Cost, warranty, reputation and certified dealer close to me were my biggest considerations.
The Yamaha seemed to be the holy grail but at around 11k and only a 3 year "limited warranty", I quickly moved on. The Honda was about the same price but the nearest dealer was 30+ miles from me but had a 5 year warranty. I looked into the Etec briefly but after seeing performance numbers, wasn't impressed. I went with the Merc 60. Out the door price was right around 8.5k after I purchased the extended "bumper to bumper" 5 year warranty (prop, controls, cables, digital gauge, installation included). The dealer is less than 5 miles from my house which weighed heavily. They also lake tested the boat, put the first break-in hour on it and tested several props until it was right. I'm seeing 38-39 mph with 2.6 seconds to plane. Couldn't be happier with my decision (knock on wood)..
But if you found a new Honda for that price, would be hard to resist.
