Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.

I purchased a 1991 Outrage 17' with 1995 Johnson 115hp last July and I love the boat.
I did a good tuneup on the engine and installed a new sonar with GPS.
The propeller I currently have is an old aluminum 13 x 19P and it's quite beat up. I'd like to replace is with a stainless one and keep the old one as a spare.
After taking the boat out a few times I decided to move the engine to 1 hole up, which raised my top speed by almost 2mph.
These were my results:
alone in the boat, 15gal of fuel, WOT 5700rpm trimmed out I did 46.6MPH (GPS) with very little chop.
Typically we are 2-4 people in the boat with fishing gear. I use the boat on a lake and on the ocean.
I am considering a Viper or an SST. Someone also told me about a Raker.
What prop would you suggest?

Do you know the WOT rpm for the motor? I would guess it is 5500 rpm's. Can you confirm?

When you monitored speed did you account for current and do a two way run? Is the GPS set to nautical or statute miles per hour?

46.6 mph with a banged up aluminum prop seems a bit high.

Where is the anti-cav plate in relation to the bottom of the hull? You may want to raise the engine another hole so it is 2 holes up.

According to what I have read, the WOT is 5500rpm.
The testing was done on a big lake so I don't believe that there is much current.
I actually have the GPS set in km/h and the speed I hit was 75.1 km/h. I compared it to an app on my phone that tracks speed and it was almost dead on.

I did also test it on a windy day and got 47.8 mph with the wind and 45.3 mph into the wind. If you take an average it comes to the same thing.

The anti-cav plate is about 1" above the bottom of the hull if I recall correctly.

I've also read that the Stiletto Advantage or Michigan Rapture are good options.
Do any of you have experience with these?

The Stiletto Advantage is a highly regarded prop but is no longer available. If you can find a used Advantage, I would grab it.

I am a bit surprised with your reported speed given a dinged up prop. Those numbers are close to, if not, the top of the range.

Is there a prop retailer that allows you to trial a prop and not have to pay for it?

I too am a bit surprised with the top speed. Considering the prop and the fact that I'm only 1 hole up.
Prop Gods is in Florida and I'd rather deal with someone local if I buy from a shop. I am also looking on eBay.

I'm not really looking at going faster, I just want good overall performance.

I think I've narrowed it down to a Viper 13-7/8" X 19P or a Stiletto advantage I 13-1/4" X 17P. From what I see, the newer style Viper has vent holes. Is that a bonus?

I will probably go one more hole up and I'll certainly keep you guys posted on my results once I get the propeller.

Keep in mind that prop size is not universal across brands and and models.

For example a 13.25X 19 Yamaha painted stainless steel prop performs different than the same size in the Yamaha Performance prop. One needs the Performance model to be in the 17" size to be comparable.

If you do a search on this site, you will find hundreds of threads discussing the benefits of the Stiletto Advantage. They are hard to find since the Stiletto brand was discontinued.

I don't think vent holes will help you since they are designed to allow the prop to spin up faster to push a heavy hull.

After looking closely at my current propeller I found out that it's an older generation OMC SST 13 x 19P (PN: 389510).
I ordered another propeller last week.
It's a Michigan Rapture 13-1/4 x 17P. I plan on moving the engine one more hole up this week.

I have exactly the same 91 17' Outrage with a 115 E-Tec. With a Viper 13 7/8 x 17 prop I topped out at 40 MPH WOT 5700 rpm. My motor is mounted 2 holes up. You are getting very good performance with your 13 x 19 aluminum prop.

From what I have read, a 90hp on this boat will get it to 40MPH and a 115hp should be good for 45MPH.
I'm surprised that you are not revving this engine over 6000rpm with a 17P prop.
What are you using to determine your speed? Are you alone on the boat, trimmed out?
By the way, my current prop is actually stainless but quite beat up.

The only thing left for me to do is move the motor up another hole to its maximum height. That will get me to 5850 WOT and maybe 42 MPH. My speed is determined by the GPS and verified by an app on my cell phone. Yes I am trimmed out and by myself although I do have 150 lbs of gear on the boat. The only other thing I can think of is my hull is heavy with some water and I have no idea if hull is heavier than it should be.

Either there is water in the hull or the engine needs a tune-up. I doubt it but is it possible that you have a 25" foot instead of 20"?

I'm able to get 44mph with 3 people, so something is off for sure.

Well, you are running a 19 pitch prop and I am using 17 pitch. I imagine that accounts for some of it. I also do not think the engine needs a tune up.

I raised the engine to 2 holes up and tried out my new propeller this past weekend.
The results were not quite what I expected.
Alone in the boat with 15gal of fuel trimmed out I got 45.3mph @ 6050rpm.
With 3 people in the boat I got 43.7mph @ 5600rpm.

I found that the hole shot was better but I had more torque steer. My old beat up SST was faster with the engine 1 hole lower :(

From what I had read, I was convinced that because the Michigan Rapture 13-1/4x17P had a high rake and was cupped, that it would behave like a 19P prop.

I did not pay much for this used prop so I'll hold on to it until I find a good deal on a 19P Viper or Rapture.
