Well I bought a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke as my kicker. Ispent last night getting it rigged up. I will post some pics of my boat shortly. I'm heading out today with the family to test the kicker. I'll post the results. ;)

That's good news Harley...
Now you have a nice pair of matched Yamaha's....

Here is Harley's thread that prompted this thread...

Thanks Joe, Just got back from a quick trip on the water. I can tell everyone looking to put a kicker on the back of your 17 Montauk DO NOT go with anything smaller than a 9.9hp. I had the little engine pegged and a was running about 10 mph. If I had put a 4 or maybe a 6 hp I think I would have done half that. I've seen a few Montauks with a 4hp. Don't know how they get through a good current. I'll be posting some pics of the boat soon.

Harley,

The hull will only go so fast until the boat gets on plane...

Any 17' Whaler hull and above seems to have a hull speed of around 6 to 8 mph maximum speed no matter if you are using a 6 hp or a 25 hp.....

My 8 hp pushes my Outrage 18' just under 8 mph..... You cannot go any faster with any other size or type of kicker....

An 8 hp is a good choice due to weight. However, IF the 9.9 weighs the same as the brand of 8 hp you are considering, then of course, go with the 9.9....
Usually the 8 hp is lighter than the 9.9.
Also, many 9.9 hp weigh the same as the 15 hp depending on manufacturer....

That's one of the reasons I made this Quick Reference Guide:

Which model Yamaha 9.9 did you buy?
The F series or the T series?

F series, 4 stroke. Didn't too much choice on a kicker as my budget dictated what I would get. The kicker runs like a champ.

The F9.9 is a good choice.

You can see from the Quick Reference Guide the different weights of the kickers.

F8 = 83 lbs...

F9.9 or F15 = 99 lbs...

The F6, F8, F9.9, and F15 would push the boat the same speed.
You could have saved a few pounds if you bought the F8 but then again, if you got a good deal on the F9.9, it might be easier to sell sometime down the road...

Now, lets see some photos..... :D

You can use these as guidelines.

You may also need the tool to shrink the file size of your photos.
