I have a 1991 Montauk Anniversary Model that I am re-powering soon. Does anyone have a recommendation on what the right engine would be? I would like to have a ninety horsepower on it but I am considering a seventy HP due to the weight differential. Any advice would be helpful.

You are right to be thinking about weight. From what I have read on this site, the 17 smirked hull will do approx 45mph with a 90hp and approx 38mph with a 70hp (+\- a few mph for either case). Fuel efficiency is another one to think about.

I have a 90 ETEC on my 1989 Montauk and it is a great pair. It runs like a top. Low fuel and oil consumption and 3 years or 300 hours betweeen required maintenance.

Your choice will be answered by what you want to do with your whaler, your brand loyalty, and the best local dealer. If you will be carrying heavy loads and/or want to pull a shier, you may want to look at a 90 HP. If you cruise around, fish and want the best mileage, you may want to look at a 70 HP. I am a Yamaha man and my F70 gets 7.8 mpg, I got 8.2 mpg at the lake the other day. That is over 150 mile range for a 17' boat.

Everyone will try to sell you based on their decision. Do your homework, pick an engine and hit the water.

X2 for the F70. I love mine.

It is very quiet, starts instantly (even when cold), is responsive and fast out of the hole. It also sips fuel - more days than not I burn much less than 5 gallons. At 257lbs the hull is balanced really well.

There are many good new tech motors out there. I agree it all depends on your applications. If I wanted a 90 four stroke, I would look long and hard at the Suzuki DF90

I re-powered my 1985 Montauk in December. I narrowed the selection down to the Yamaha 70 and the etec 90. I went with the etec for two reasons: the service schedule, and a little more perceived power for towing kids/skiers.

So far, the etec has been great. The only negative I'd make is that getting the engine mounted at the correct height can be tricky due to the splash well. This is a fairly well documented topic, but a factor to consider if you go with an etec. That said, it may be a non-issue for the 1991 model.
