Im getting close to acquiring a 17' super sport late 80's model. Looks brand new, splashed about 10 times owner is super anal about upkeep, it's been up on blocks for last 20 yrs and looks brand new. Original engine is underpowered 25 Yamaha. So I'm going to have to replace engine and controls...my first couple of questions are...what's the Hull worth? What size/make engine would you suggets (Honda 90?) what type of cost am I looking at to get it to working order? gas tank, steering controls...etc, appreciate any feedback.

If it is a genuine museum piece as you describe, and is a true Super Sport 17 Model, with the mahogany interior, then it's pretty rare and I'd guess to the right owner would be worth $5 - 6K, hull and interior alone.

The hull is rated for 100 horsepower. Since you have Yamaha controls on there already, you can potentially save some money there, but you are still talking about $8-10 K or possibly a little be more depending on the size of motor. I would not put less than a 70 on that hull. You could go with an F70 or F90 in a Yamaha or go with an eTec anywhere from 75 to 90 to 90HO.

Hondas are great motors, but when I looked into them they were a good deal more expensive than other motors of the same horsepower.
