requires short shaft or adding a jack plate. this will be a shrimping, gigging, little kid riding boat.

my options are:
1. 25 Yamaha short shaft WITHOUT tilt and trim weighing 180lbs.
2. 25 Yamaha long shaft WITH tilt and trim requiring modification
3. 20 Yamaha short shaft WITHOUT tilt and trim but only weighing 117 lbs.

the "experts" have told me the top in will be 25-28 mph on the 20 and 25 given the weight difference. the big difference will be hole shot. the top speed nor the hole shot are a big deal bc we have a 21 cc for other purposes.

QUESTION: is the 20 hp too under powered for this boat? it is significantly less money which is part of the draw

Note: hull and would have been redone but not to the aesthetic beauty it was just to be solid and functional.

I have a 1969 13 footer with a 20hp 4stroke Mercury. It has an aluminum 10 pitch prop. On flat water with only me, it will go 23mph. With another adult, it will go 19 mph. With three adults, it will hit 15-16 mph.

The next repower, I will probably put at 30hp on it just to go a little faster.

Are you stuck on Yamaha?

There are other choices in 30hp motors with Short Shaft that are just as light weight as the ones you mention.

Honda 30hp Short Shaft = 155 lbs.
Mercury 30hp Short Shaft = 172 lbs.
etc.

Suzuki has a short shaft 25HP (the 30HP seems to only be available in long shaft) with the following weights

Manual S: 136.6 / Electric S: 143

not married to yamaha but i figure there is a reason they hold 78% of the market in the range I'm looking. thanks for the other options. I'm thinking my best bet is find a used 2 stroke but may be hard to find in short shaft

think I found a motor. can someone direct me to a link or article on the length and type of steering cables I will need?

Second question: Will have to purchase throttle box and cables....what length cables for the 13 whaler?

The length of both throttle/shift cables and helm cables will be determined by hoe/where you set your console, if you are remodeling/restoring the interior.
Can't say for sure about throttle/shift cables, but both Telflex and Uflex have measuring guidelines on their websites.

My Whaler is an older 13"4"" model. For power I use a two cycle 35 HP Evinrude with a four blade prop. I would not want less power. However it is quite "frisky". Do not make the mistake of under powering the boat. Several year ago I had the same boat with a 20 HP Johnson. It was slow.
