I have read many posts on W.C about repowering classic Whalers. I currently have a 70 HP VRO Evinrude weighing in around 250 pounds on my Dauntless 15. I am considering repowering with either a Yamaha F70 or 60 HP E-TEC to replace it.

I would love to hear from some of you that have had a repower experience with either of these engines on a 15 Ft hull. Also, I am unsure how much my hull differs from the, "classic" 15 foot hull, but does the mounting height of the engines I have read about here also apply to my slightly more, "modern" hull.

Both Yamahas, and the eTec, weigh less then your VRO 70, which actually tips the scales at around 260 in the 20" shaft, electric start, power trim configuration. If you go with one of those 3 motors, weight is not an issue - or in any case, it's no worse and likely slightly better than what you have now.

My wife and I have a 1984 Sport 15 without an outboard. We had a 1984 Johnson 70 Horsepower engine on it, which ran miserably. We sold the engine about a year after we bought the little whaler six years ago.
The Yamaha and the Evinrude are both excellent engines. I will most likely repower our whaler with the Yamaha F70 because I like four stokes. Part of this is because my two stroke Johnson burned me so badly. I do, however, realize that the modern day Evinrude two strokes are nothing like the old generation two strokes.

Please note that the modern day two strokes require two stroke oil to be mixed with their gasoline, and two stroke oil is not cheap by any means.
The height of the engine with reference to the transom, and the water line is a huge variable on how well your boat will perform. Please do your research carefully.

Don't rule out a modern DFI like the E-TEC. While it does have a oil reservoir, it is highly efficient and runs at either a 50 or 100:1 mix.

The cost of the DFI oil is comparable to the cost of a 4 stroke's oil/filter change.

Thanks for the replies. Tedious, I know you have the F70 on your boat. Could you maybe post a picture of your boat with that motor on your personal page? By the way, the Johnson 70 in the pics of your boat on your personal page are the twin of my Evinrude 70, just with Johnson decals, so I am most interested in your before and after performance.

Be careful with a 60. My inlaws have a dauntless 15 with an etec 60 on it. Boat runs great with two people, but more than three, wont plane and plows through the water.

I just repowered my super sport 15 this week. I am picking it up tomorrow. I decided on the yahama f70. I'll try to post some pictures as soon as I get back in town with it.

Made a deal on a F70 last Saturday. Dropping the boat off next week for the installation. I think I found a knowledgable dealer who has repowered quite a few Whalers. Tells me starting out at 2 holes up is no problem. We did not include a prop in the deal so I need something to get started with. I have read many threads but mostly on older Whalers with different hulls than my Dauntless which is pretty much a vee hull compared to my prior classic sport. My Dauntless also has Smart Tabs which work great and is the reason I am starting at 2 holes up and not the highest engine mounting height. Hoping someone here can give prop advice.
