Hey guys I am looking at a boat with twin Yamaha 225's from 2001. They appear to have been well maintained ...as is the boat. They are supposed to have 360 hours on them, but they were mothballed as the boat was not used for three seasons.

I will sea trail them if I make an offer but I would love to know what the consensus is on these motors generally speaking. Reliable? decent fuel economy (for an older twostroke)? I would like to get a few years out of them -is that realistic assuming they were properly serviced & maintained.

Are they old-school, carbed two-strokes, or HPDIs? Both will be fairly noisy and smelly compared to modern motors, but they should be reasonably reliable. The fuel-injected HPDIs will get much better fuel economy, but they do have a number of internal filters and vapor tanks that can get gummed up if sitting for a while.

In general, with so few hours, either type of motor should be good for quite a few years yet.

They are OX66's, Not HDPI's but are I believe fuel injected.

I found and old thread and they are /were generally highly regarded from a reliablity /longevity standpoint. Biggest downside was fuel consumption and apperently they burned alot of oil as well.

I currently own a 225 OX 2000 on my OR . I have enjoyed it for several years now until this year I got a lot of carbon build up in a piston and blew a ring .. The engine is being rebuilt currently . I was told it could have been the fact that I used non Yamalube and didn't use ring free this season . I will going forward that's for sure . I plan on replacing the O2 sensor also and all filters .. Hope this helps .. I think you will be fine with those engines . They do smoke a bit ..
