The tilt motor on my Johnson 90 hp outboard failed. I released the manual screw to lower motor but I can't
Raise the motor seems to be still locked or engaged. I need to raise the motor to trailer it. Is there another release other then the screw. Outboard went down but won't pull up.
Any help will be appriciated.

Should be the same screw.

I can raise and lower my 70hp Evinrude with the screw loose.
It is much more difficult to raise and you need to raise it slowly.

Joe, I I did loosen that screw maybe 1 1/2 turns to left till it wouldn't go any further.
Could a coil on tilt motor still be engage where I can't move it up.
I totally lost at what to do.

If you don't hear the motor running then it isn't engaging.

Turn off or disconnect the battery to make sure it is off so you aren't fighting the motor hydraulics.

OK I'm sorry but try a blue pill.
That aside you are looking at very small passages for the hydraulic fluid to pass through and therefore it takes a lot of force and going slowly to pull the engine up.
Anyway a chance to drain all the hydraulic?

I disconnected the battery and still can't Raise the motor. Help !

My 1985 Evinrude 90HP uses the same screw - allows movement down/up. As noted...down is easy. Up is hard and slow. Draining fluid/battery disconnect not required. I see no way there could be a mechanical issue since the motor just basically rides on the trim/tilt piston.

Just to confirm...the recessed slotted screw head you did is on right side of motor?

If anyone thinks there tilt motor is still engaging for any reason, then disconnecting the battery will eliminate that possible problem.

Sure, normally you do not need to disconnect the battery but it may be possible that one of the tilt connections is stuck on, so again, disconnecting the battery will eliminate that problem.

My 1993 Johnson 90hp engine has the screw on the port side of outboard.

Yes draining the hydraulic fluid will help as air is easier to pass than oil, again as mentioned before it will be slow going and it will take effort to slowly raise it.
There is a disadvantage of draining as you later on need to bleed the air out.
Osprey 1 You can't even move it a couple of degrees from vertical?

I finally got the outboard to lift up. It was tough and I had to pry it but it did lift up.

Yea Whalerbob that is what millions of men use when they can't get their Johnson up.

To the OP glad to hear, but what caused it to not go up and don't tell me she was ugly, give us the real reason.

I did not expect the amount of effort required to lift outboard when I loosened the screw. The pressure from the suction of H fluid and the weight. I used a 2 X 4 piece of wood and pried it up against the trailer.

Not always, but sometimes brute force is needed and the only option. Glad you used some leverage and were able to move it.

coincidently, my 60 hp evinrude on my lake boat wouldnot raise up recently, i turned the screw out as manual directs, started the engine..put it in reverse and floored it ! engine popped up and then went back down..lo and behold , my trim nows raises it up and down now..i give up..will ck stuff out when i pull it out of the lake later this week..
