Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Repowering 1986 18' Outrage

I have an 18's Outrage. I have an original 150 Johnson on it that now has two cylinders that have zero and 18 lbs of compression. Mechanic says he can rebuild i for $2400 or I can repower it.

I am leaning towards one of two things:
1. Trading in the hull - not sure what I would get for it - and buy a used center console
2. Repowering existing boat - i'd like to get some thoughts on what I would repower with and potential costs.

Thanks - this is my first post.

Lots of good choices on this current list.

The lightest motors seems to always be a good choice however all of these motors have been installed.
Many have also chosen the Suzuki 140 lately.

Depends on which reputable outboard dealers are near you.

I'm quite happy with my Suzuki DF140A. It replaced a 1985 Johnson 150.

It has less torque, so when propped ideally for WOT its a little slower to get on plane. I have two props. Fuel economy is outstanding. With a moderate load I can do 30mph on 4.25 gals/hr.

My 2nd choice was an E-TEC 135 HO or 150.

Follow up post - do you have any idea where I can get an idea what my hull alone would go for in a trade in? If I can;t get much got the hull - i think I would have to repower then trade it in.

Are you happy with the hull? If so, then repower. If not, sell it privately & buy the one you'd like.

I seriously doubt that repowering just to get more value as a trade-in would even be a break-even proposition. You'd more likely lose money.

Assuming:

Boat without motor
resale to private party via Craigslist, Boat trader etc.
Not including trailer

Excellent condition - $3-5k
Good condition $2,500-4k
Bottom paint - subtract $500
Trailer add $500
Trade in value to dealer is 2k or less.

Do NOT repower and sell, you will loose 30% or more of the cost to re-power once motor is installed.

Do NOT do a rebuild.

Consider buying a inexpensive boat with a decent 140/150 hp engine and swap the motor to the Outrage and ditch the inexpensive boat. This has been done and it can be a great move.

Adding to Phils post... A new engine is going to be in the +/- $10k range. Used ones get cheaper as they get older of course... Maybe $3k for a late model carbureted Johnson 150.

If your 18 is in good+ condition, it should be fairly easy to sell. If its in excellent condition, effortless to sell!
