Hello new member here. I have a question about my mercury 115 1998 elpto. My question is my shift and throttle cables have become stiff to the point that i might break something forcing it. I would like to replace my cables. Do i need 2 cables? One of my cables has cc17917-5243 stamped on it the other nothing that i can see. Is one a shift and one throttle? My boat is a 1987 Montauk. Thank you. Brian

I would change as a pair. Yes one is shift and the other throttle. You may want to disconnect each from the engine and see which cable is causing resistance. This will confirm that the shift / throttle control is not the problem ? Good luck .

Looks like your cables are 17 feet in length.

Also see this FAQ for other optional lengths.

I would *HIGHLY* recommend you purchase Sea Star Solutions (formerly Teleflex) "XTREME" throttle and shift cables. They are the smoothest and best cables on the market today. There is a Mercury specific cable made for both a Mercury control and a Mercury engine.
