I want to repower a 1987 Montauk. For nearshore use I would prefer twins. Can anyone point me to previous discussions about this issue? I'm thinking about 50 HP Yamaha four strokes.

Can't help you with your question but I do prefer twins too and just had to settle for one 33 years ago and have no regrets.
Fun aside, with today's reliability and economy in outboards, get a nice new higher horsepower 4 stroke and a small kicker if you're worried about getting back and you can also troll.

That is a lot of weight to hang on back of a Montauk. 500lbs! I think its two much and any added safety of a twin would be more than offset by the poorer handling of all that weight. Boat really designed for 300lb max engine. The etec 90hp at 335lbs works well as single. But for twins...think you'd be much better off going with 40s, they are much lighter...two would combine for 370...

Can you define "nearshore" that can mean a lot of different things..........especially if you live in Nevada?

Should have said YAMAHA four stroke 40s....they'd combine for 370, which I think is really the upper upper limit
