I have a 2005 150 sport with 60 merc. lately I am having difficulty getting the throttle into reverse. soemtimes it will go back and other times it seems like it's blocked by something. I have found if I put some downward pressure on the throttle before I pull back it gets into gear better. Does anyone have any advise? seems like something has to be ging on in the gear box. everything seems to move alright under the engine cowl.

With the shift cable disconnected from the engine see how easily the shifter at the helm will move in and out of reverse. Wouldn't be surprised if the issue was in there.
If that works ok then slide the shifter (on the engine) back and forth between reverse, neutral, and forward. You will likely need to turn the prop slightly with your foot when going in and out of gear.
If it is hard to shift it there, check your gear oil for metal shavings.

Thank you. I will try that tomorrow morning. I suppose I should be hoping to find the issue in the shift box at the helm. Looking for metal in the gear oil sounds really bad.

Lots of plastic in the newer helm controls. Wouldn't be surprised if something there is broken, out of alignment, or something is simply floating around in there, etc. I would hope for the issue to be in the control box and not the gear box. :)
