I am considering repowering from a 1996 Johnson 115 to a new 150 E Tec on a 1996 17'6" Outrage II. Has anyone had any experience with repowering to the E Tec which weighs around 430 lbs versus 320 or so with the 115 Johnson. I figure the 150 will allow me to run at a lower RPM and save engine wear but am worried about the weight issue. I do have some problems with porpoising and may go to trim tabs at some point. The 17' Outrage II is rated up to 150 hp.... so, no problem there....
Weight of the E-Tec engine is also NO problem at all....
The 115 hp is actually a little underpowered as far as I am concerned as I owned a 1997 Outrage 17' II for awhile...

I would like to know which holes your engine is mounted in now?
If it is all the way down, then this may be causing the porpoise problem.

I owned a 17 with a 115 Merc and always wanted more power. I think you should be fine with the added weight. What you can do is put 100 pounds of weight on your transom and see if the static trim becomes an issue. I used to get a bit too much water through the side scuppers until I replaced them with a new set. Finding the right trim for you engine in various conditions should help with porpoising. A Doel Fin would help too -- in my opinion.

I believe it is in the third hole down from the top hole..i.e. the engine can go one more hole higher on the transom. I had it raised a couple of years ago and it helped. I will double check. Have tried the Doel type fins but did little to help. Want to go to more HP. Next issue will be properly propping the 150 E Tec

Sounds like you have the engine high enough.

Maybe a different type of prop would help but then, get the new engine first....
