Does anyone have much experience with an Outrage 18 or 20 on Lake Erie's Western basin? Is it just me or does this lake have some serious chop?? How do they ride away from the islands in two to three's?

My 17' Montauk does just fine, remember it's a Whaler and it's made forLake Erie. As far as the chop it is the shallowist of the great lakes and kicks up quick but at calms down quickly as well.

I have run a 17 Montauk in the soup all over from Sandusky to Kelly's Island and of course Put-In-bay. I even crossed the lake with it from the mouth of the Detroit River to Sandusky. I great times and it was those times that assured me of the Whaler's capabilities. Once I had the entire cockpit filled with water at least mid way up my shines off the north end of Kelly's Island. I also had it in 6'ers running off the North East shore of South Bass Island. The boat would take more than you were willing handle. The limiting factor of the hull was the people aboard.

Of course the 18 will do better than the 17 Montauk as the Outrage has a true deep vee design and handles the chop much better. Also the extra weight from the center fuel tank adds a lot of heft to over powering the waves. However, once again it is just like the Montauk. The limiting factor is the crew aboard and how much are you willing to take.

Now on the 20' outrages I am not sure if you know that there are 2 Models of 20' Outrages. There was the early V-20 which had a very shallow deep rise and the later 20 Outrage which had a greater dead rise and a much improved ride. I would take an 18 Outrage over the early V-20 Outrage. The V-20 was notorious for a pounding rough ride. However, the later 20' Outrage was essentially a 22 Outrage with 2' removed from the stern area and would have the best ride of them all. I have run my current 22 Outrage across Lake Erie and around the Islands and it is a rock solid dry boat. It rides like a boat of 30 feet.

The V-20 Outrage hull was built up to 1986 and the 20' Outrage was 1986 - 1989

We have a place on Middle Bass, and I would like to keep a boat there again. Hopefully an Outrage. Can't decide on 18 or '86 and later 20 with the deeper V. Provided I can find the right one without travelling 500 miles!! I love those classics! I'm used to the ride in a 23 ft Lyman and didn't know how these smaller boats would do out away from the islands when the wind kicks. It's encouraging to hear your experiences with the dry rides. Thanks for the input.

:) had to throw it out there....Honestly though I was opposed to go look at an 18 this evening. I just got out of work really late. It is located 45 minutes north of Detroit and they are asking 9500 but will take offers
