Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Deal of the century on a 1975 Newport or what?

A GREAT friend called to tell me his father in law wanted to sell his bay boat since it was sitting for the last 3 years. I went to take a look after he told me a stupid low price and found 3 years of pine needles and dirt plus flat tires, ruined seat cushions and a rusty trailer but it was a for-real Boston Whaler!

He aired up the tires and I pulled it home. It took all of 45 minutes to pull and clean the carbs and the 1975 70 hp Evinrude fired right up! The 40 year old motor lives (130 psi on all 3 cylinders). That was easy!

I bolted a couple of folding seats up front, put an Igloo cooler with cushion behind the console and another great friend GAVE me a galvanized trailer to haul it with. Time to see if it floats...

My wife and I took it out for a short 30 minute ride and after initially only doing 12 mph (guess I missed something in the carb cleaning) it jumped to 31 mph and ran like new. Idled like a purring kitten and jumped to plane in nothing flat. Now I get brave.

That was all the run time we could get in before taking a family trip to Lake Panasofkee. From my house in Pensacola that's a 415 mile ride with a boat I've only run for 30 minutes! Talk about living on faith. The boat ran great, the trailer towed like a dream (one flat tire but that's par) and we made it back with some great stories. 830 miles round trip and 5 days of fishing with no issues at all, thank you Lord for watching out for fools like me!

Oh yeah, the stupid low price I paid for my 1975 Newport with 70 hp motor, working tilt and trim, working lights, solid floor and transom?

$250!

Again, thank you Lord for blessing me with good friends and a great boat.

I guess your friend was not particularly fond of his "father-in-law"....in actuality we are all entitled to a "gimme" in out lives.......I am sure you have tales on the opposite end. Good find and good luck with the boat. Did you really have to "giggle"in your second post?

The price was actually what the paw-in-law named, my friend just called me before he told anyone else. You're right about the gimme, I've made enough bad deals in the past that I'm still pretty deep in the red overall.

As far as the giggle....what can I say, I can't stop!!
