If you do not live in the Midwest, you may not have heard the recent news that the BP (British Petroleum) refinery in Indiana is being allowed to dump more refinery waste water and suspended solids including mercury into Lake Michigan, in exchange for 80 jobs by the state of Indiana. While that may be acceptable to some in Indiana, it is strongly opposed by most Illinois and Michigan residents. Many of us get our drinking water from Lake Michigan. BP claims that their waste is perfectly safe. Mercury in drinking water is not at all safe under any circumstance! It find its way into the fish in the lake as well. If the BP waste is safe, why not have it trucked to BP executives and employees homes to water their lawns, and fill their pools with. Perhaps they would like to make ice cubes for their drinks at the next BP board meeting. After all it is supposed to be safe. I urge all of you to vote with your wallet in this matter. Do not purchase any BP products. Thats right. What I mean is....BOYCOTT BP!

if what you say is true, then why not take action with the government of Indiana? They would be more likely to bow to pressure...after all, everybody is after the oil companies these days. Who is going after the states that allow such behavior?

Dan; no I do not work for Sunoco (I thought they were out of business) or any oil company or competitor to BP.

Illinois Congressman Kirk is pursuing legal action to stop this dumping.

I harbor no personal animosity toward the oil companies. We all need
oil for our cars, trucks, boats, planes and trains. But when any company
such as BP dumps waste into Lake Michigan, a place where I fish, boat,
and is the supply of my drinking water, I do not let it slide.

Doesn't this violate the federal "clean water act" ? There was a company on "Long Island" years ago that had permit's for dumping as much as 2 lbs of lead, copper, and arsenic into "Glen Cove Creek" per day, they made the "Lumen's" for light bulbs, the creek is now a "super fund" site, the company is long gone.
