Doing routine maintenance on my 1993 Johnson 88 spl.
The Whaler is a 1961 16' Nauset.
1st time doing an impeller change since acquiring the engine in 2014.
I got the lower unit off, no problem. Pump housing is off.
But...
I cannot get the impeller off of the drive shaft. I am afraid I'll damage something if I pry too hard!
Any tricks?
Eric

The impeller can be removed (usually) with two regular screw drivers placed opposite each other underneath the impeller, prying the impeller up. Look at the demonstration at 1:46 on this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WZMA...WZMArnU48c Soak it with PB Blaster.

Thanks guys,
I got it off, but only after cutting off the metal ring with a dremmel. No amount of PB blaster or big screwdrivers would move it!

yes, big relief. Now I just need to put it all back together!
Then the rubrail replacement is next.....

Since you are servicing your cooling system on the 88 SPL, I recommend replacement of the thermostats, relief valves, springs and thermostat housing gaskets. Look for Seahorse's advice on how to notch the relief valves to prevent static water seizing the thermostats. You may also want to check and/or replace your anodes.

When reassembling the impeller use a waterproof grease or Nickel filled Never-Seize.

Thanks all, I will use anti seize and the thermostats are later in the winter!
It is a great engine.
