Hey all,

Looking for opinions and personal experiences with the Yamaha 90 2 cycle, 2007.

I saw one listed near me, and while I'm not actively looking for an engine, if this is a good one, then maybe it's something to consider. The guy is asking about 4300 for it. Is that hight? About right? A steal?

What should I look out for?

I'd be putting it on the Menemsha to replace the old Evinrude VRO 90, in hopes of improving the mileage a bit, and just for an upgrade. The old Ev still runs like a champ, but, as we all know, it likes its gasoline.

You probably won't improve millage much / if any but I own a 1989 version and my experience and everything I've heard is it's a very solid and reliable engine. I think the millage and overall condition would dictate the value so probably should have a mechanic check it out if you are not familiar. It's the lightest 90hp ever made so it's a great match for a Montauk.

Pros:
Reliable, low cost, light weight
Cons:
Loud, subject to rust, especially trim/tilt, uses lots of gas, smells like a 2-stroke

How is it possible to use more fuel than my old vro 90? I might as well pour the fuel over the side!

My original engine was a 1989 evenrude vro 90. No noticeable difference in fuel economy but the evenrude seemed to have more power / speed and ran smother at idle since it's 4 cylinder vs 3 but no difference cruising. Comparable in terms of noise as I recall. Not sure if it matters but mine is the "inshore series" and I've done 95 % salt water use with no rust but it's garage kept and I have replaced the tilt trim at least one.

For what its worth I bought a 1992 Montauk in great shape this past winter, it also had a 1992 Yamaha 90 on it, basically they kept these motors the same for years except for carb & minor electrical stuff I believe until 2008 or so. Before I bought the boat I asked the owner approx. how many hrs were on the motor he was honest and guessed prob over 3000 hrs!! Said he replaced the shift shaft & 1 lower unit in it since new & had the carbs cleaned a few times. I was hesitant on buying it after that but I did, I checked compression and all cylinders were around 120 psi & it ran great...been using it so far this summer without a prob...starts up fine, idles fine & runs like a top! Makes me wonder when it does decide to blow to repower with 4 stoke or rebuild the 2 stroke. Hope this helps.
