Staying at a friends house for a nice 4 day weekend for fishing and relaxation. Unfortunately I'm leaving my Whalers home for this one, but will still try and get some pics of our(hopefully) big catch.

I lived in the keys for 6 years in the late 80's and early 90's. Probably one of the best periods in my life.....fishing was incredible. I haven't been back since October 2004 and boy have things changed. I miss the old Keys atmosphere. Good times and better memories.

It was a nice weekend. the people I went down with were born and raised in key west, so they were a little too cool to do some of the touristy things(Hemingway festival was in full swing), but I got a good feel for the place anyway. we did do some fishing but didn't rush out at the crack of dawn, so didn't get to do all they wanted to do. I was however happy catching my first Baracuda(bahamian kingfish lol) and a nice large jack crevelle that was almost lunch for a 8+ foot shark that followed it up from the deep. The water was gin clear and I was able to still see bottom in 80 feet!!!!!!!!! I only wish my 21' was ready as I spent most of the time day dreaming how it would be to be on my own boat down there. Maybe mext year ;) I did however make my mind up on a few Ideas I had for the 21, so I made a little progress on that project without even having to touch it.

Are those jack crevelle good to eat?? I caught one off the seven mile bridge. Didn't know if it was good eating or not so I threw it back.

I haven't eaten one yet, my old man "tried" once, but couldn't finish it. he will eat just about ANY kind of fish too and be happy with it. I know a guy who swears the thing to do with them is to fillet, skin and then soak in buttermilk overnight. he swears it will taste as good as any grouper you have had. my father didn't skin the fish, but soaked it in skim milk lmao :D
I heard baracudas are good eating, but because they eat so many reef fish that may have toxins they should be avoided too.

Two nice fish, Bob! Those jack crevalle are fighting fish! How's the 21 project coming? What are your ideas?

Great pictures! I've fished down there a few times and know its outstanding. Years ago, I hooked up with one of those Keys Barracudas and it launched out of the water and over the boat, nearly taking my head off. The mono-line broke shortly afterwards...The water looks awesome. I've never "tried" Barracuda (saw it on a menu in North Carolina once). Jack Crevalle, awesome fighter. Thanks for sharing!! Now where are the pics of babes in bikini's?:D

Bob,
I remember reading an article in "Saltwater Sportsman" years ago about eating barracuda. If I remember correctly it seems like it's a seasonal thing wheter it is toxic or not. The article said that some of the locals in the Bahamas would put the fish on an ant pile and if the ants started eating it then it was ok and they would pick it up and eat it themselves. If the ants refused it then they would toss it. Other than that there didn't seem to be a definitive test as to its toxicity.
