Classic ribsides and smoothsides had a vinyl type material that covered the internal hull walls from the transom to the bow holding area. This material on my 1974 Outrage 21, like most, is dark brown in color and has texture that reminds me of an artificial grass cloth. I am looking for ideas others have used to resecure this material to the hull walls or renovation ideas that have worked such as paint, removal and/or replacement. This material is visible in the photos of 21s available on this site. Thanks for your input and thanks to Joe for fixing my site access.

I have been looking at pictures of some of the restored 21 Outrages and it seems in most cases that the material in question has been totally removed. I am curious if the inner surface of the "as original" hull was gel coated. If so, I suspect that the adhesives used to adhere the original vinyl could be cleaned up nicely. I think removing the vinyl would give a much cleaner, tighter appearance to the boat. Anyone done this?

it is not gel coated behind the vinyl. I removed mine on my 1974 21ft

it was just rough glass, my vinyl had detached, so I just pulled it off. my boat is just a working fishing boat, so I am not really concerned with appearance

My original inquiry on this repair did not get much of a response so I will try again. After removing subject vinyl, I find remaining adhesive over ungeled glass. Removing the old adhesive is somewhat difficult due to the location and the agility of my old body. For those of you who have painted this after removing the vinyl, what type preparation did you do. Is removing all the adhesive absolutely necessary and what type paint and paint results did you have. Thanks for your input.

The answer to your question is an easy one..
Remove this un wanted covering material as best as possible.
Carefully; and taking your time doing so;sand all residual glue adhering to your inner surfaces with the help of your favorite handy tool(s)
DA works rather well and for the tight corners the Dremel vibrating sander/cutter has wonderful qualities.
Having bared and sanded your inner hull surfaces,you can then choose your preferred re covering of the surfaces.
One could use gelcoat carefully applied by brush and tidied up with light sandings OR
Use a premium two parts epoxy paint and blend the color to match the decking surfaces.
