Hello everyone.
I have 1972 13 foot Boston Whaler. I bought it with 28hp 1980s evenrude motor. The motor is a trouble maker.
Cleaned carb, replaced lines, replaced fuel pump.... Long story short keeps on bogging, probably had a lot of usage before me. I have almost new 5(five)HP Nissan motor, and I was hoping that I could use it while I look for an affordable 20hP motor. Can anybody please tell me if 5hp motor would push 13 foot Whaler, for very casual 4-6 miles total fishing trips? I thank you an advance,
Mike.

Feel your concerns. I have an
1984 Merc 25 hp that's working OK, but is *quirky*. Often wonder if I should shoot the proverbial lock off for a modern 4-stroke or rebuild a 30-yr old motor at a fraction of the cost.
As attractive a new 4-stroke is I'm bothered by the fact a new Merc 25-hp is 150-lbs. My present Merc weighs 105-lbs. My rig is a
1964 Sport 13' with the old 15" transom.
Interested on how you re-power.
(EDIT: please follow guideline #1 on the front page and use the full 4 digit year for everything)

Thanks for the input!
Will take it to water tomorrow, see how it behaves. I am taking my buddy tomorrow, he knows a little bit about motors, maybe he can adjust it on the water. If the old boy Evenrude/ Johnson will give me trouble, I will take Joe's advice and look for a clean used 10-20HP. Hopefully he will be a good boy (outboard, not my buddy). Will update upon return.
Have a great weekend!

Mike, as long as you have decent compression, your 28 should be fixable, and with what you've already replaced it shouldn't be a ton of money. Sounds more like a link and sync problem than anything else at this point.
The link and sync isn't really tough, but you'll want to have the factory service manual.
