1979 Mercury 80 hp, stutters and stalls at slow idle even when not in gear, tried adjusting slow idle on both carbs, limited improvement. I suspect need to overhaul carbs, local shop wants $500 to do the job, motor runs great otherwise. Pretty handy with tools, used to be a office equipment tech, mechanical cash registers etc, and just replaced impeller. How much of specific outboard knowledge is required to tackle this.

Likely to be pretty easy if parts are available. First purchase a carb rebuild kit (usually includes all new seals and floats) and service manual. Remove carbs and disassemble. Then clean everything with small brushes and carb cleaner and blow dry with compressed air. Inspect main jets an idle jets and replace if in bad condition. Would be good idea to remove intake and inspect reed valves at the same time. This spring I rebuilt the carbs in my 1998 Yamaha 2 stroke for the first time myself and it wasn't to bad. The advice above is very good, I'd also suggest you watch a few youtube videos.

So far i have done the carb clean up with additives in gas, got some positive results, but still stalled when putting in gear, found that the idle stop locknut was loose, adjusted idle stop to get to 950 rpm out of water, was running at 600 rpm on flush adapter, took it out to the lake and already some positive results, adjusted slow idle, now running at 800 rpm at idle in water.

Have run about 20 gallons through it in the past few weeks while out fishing and so far so good. No stalling, and starts on first crank.

Forgot to mention replaced fuel line and bulb.

Running a 19 pitch prop, max out at 4900 rpm and 32 mph with 3 people on board, looking into getting a 17 pitch prop
