Just repowered with a F90 yamaha Got rid of a caburated Merc THANK GOD Would like some advice on the new engine. I was told by the dealership that the engine has aYAMAHA break in period of 10 hours--They state not to accelarate more then 3/4 an to vary the speeds--after the 10 hours to change the fluids an filters on the engine--Guess every dealer is different??an it makes sense until I read the new engines Yama manual, an it clearly states to wait 20hours to do the change in fluids an no where in the manual does it state to not exceed 3/4 on the accelarate -- Does this make sense to any one The dealer advising me not to exceed 3/4 wen the engine manual doesnt state that--is the dealer going above an beyond the factory specs Not sure wat to make of thiis

Read and Follow the manual.

From the owner's manual:

Procedure for 4-stroke models
Run the engine under load (in gear with a propeller installed) for 10 hours as follows.
1. First hour: Run the engine at 2000 r/min or at approximately half throttle.
2. Second hour: Run the engine at 3000 r/min or at approximately three-quarter throttle.
3. Remaining eight hours:
Run the engine at any speed. However, avoid operating at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time.
4. After the first 10 hours: Operate the engine normally.

Servicing Motor: On page 53,
- change the lower unit oil,
-inspect/change motor oil at 10 hrs.
-clean/inspect/replace spark plugs

The manual shows how to change the motor oil and gear oil. It is a straight forward DIY. Not necessary to pay a yard $100+/hr to do.

Use OEM oil/filters etc. I bought my supplies from SIMYamaha.com online for my F115.

You want to do the break in properly to ensure the rings seat properly.

What year and model of boat is the engine on? What propeller did the provide (brand and size)? Where is the engine mounted?

I have just broken in a couple of the new Yamahas. I have a 115 to break in as well. My F-115, F9.9, and F300's are all 4 strokes and they all have the same information clearly stated for breaking them in properly.
This information and procedure can be found in each manual the same way. Look in the index under OPERATION, breaking in engine, procedure for 4-stroke models. This is on page 39 in my manuals.
According to MY Yamaha manuals, you should run your engine in gear and under load, (propeller installed), at 2000 rpm or approximately 1/2 throttle the first hour.
For the second hour, run the engine at 3000 rpm or approximately 3/4 throttle
For the remaining8 hrs, run the engine at any speed, but avoid running at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time.
That is the whole break in procedure per Yamaha for the first 10 hours.

Now, as far as engine maintenance, you will need to refer to the maintence section of your manual. A table is provided in the manual, starting on page 62 that shows exactly what is required after the first 10 hours of operation.
You should change the engine oil and the lower unit oil, among other things, at this time. The next service is at 50 hours, and for the remaing life of the engine the intervals are at 100 hrs.

I don't know what you are reading there that states anything different from what I have stated here, but it is definitely NOT the Yamaha engine owner's manual.

NOTE TO PHIL: sorry, apparently we were typing at the same time!
I don't recommend doing maintenance during the warranty period yourself. It is important that the dealer has undisputable records of proper maintenance if a warranty issue arises. There are some procedures that absolutely MUST be done at the dealer at the 200 hour, 500 hour and 1000 hour intervals, including the adjustment of valve lash. This is also covered on the maintenance chart of the owners manual.

Interestingly, I have reviewed my different owners manuals and discovered some differences in them. My F-300 manual actually DOES clearly state that the fluid changes and a lot of additional maintenance procedures should be done by the dealer, and the initial interval is at 20 hours, not 10.

Perhaps Yamaha has changed their recommendations? As far as the break in procedure, the F-300 and the F-9.9 manual have a little different wording regarding the second hour of operation as well. They refer to getting the boat up on plane and then backing off the throttle while still holding the boat on plane for the second hour instead of a direct reference to engine speed or throttle position, but this would mean essentially the same thing in engine speed.

I may have a beginning year F-115 motor/manual for my 2013 models, and an end of year model F-300 and F-9.9 motosr/manuals. It is possible that Yamaha has changed their recommendations again for 2014.

You should definitely follow YOUR manual on both break-in and recommended maintenance intervals. I don't think it will hurt your motor to do it the 2013 way as opposed to the later guide of 20 hour initial maintenance, and I used the old 10 hour maintenance as my initial maintenance even on the F-300's.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY extremely helpfull. The Yamaha 90 is on a 170 montauk 2004 I have to get back to u with the prop info. I know the prop is aluminum an they had to change the prop to a diff one cause the RPMs were to high an they needed to change the pitch I think they went with a 17 but not sure have to get the model an number of the prop. I absolutely guarantee you that if you have the Owner's Manual for your motor, and not some other manual, you HAVE the break in info for your motor. Look in the index under OPERATION, then look for "breaking in engine", then "procedure for 4-stroke models". IT IS THERE.

The INDEX is located near the front of the manual. Good Luck!

If your manual does not have the words "Owners Manual" on the front cover, get that manual from your dealer, he still has it. It comes with every motor Yamaha makes, and it should have been given to you at time of delivery.
