I have a new to me 1989 Outrage and I put a 2006 Yamaha f225 on it. They mounted the motor as this forum suggested, & I had the batteries moved to the console for weight purposes. It came with a 17 pitch prop. Well I see 17 stamped into it in two spots so I assume its a 17. Anyway, Ive been out a few times and it can run up to 6200 maybe I even saw 6300 RPMs....yet the tach indicated 37 knots, which seemed sort of slow....The fuel tank was 3/4 full and it was just myself on board. I was hoping/ expecting the boat to be a bit faster with nearly max hp? The bottom is freshly painted. I know the engine should max out in the high 5000 range, so the Local dealer suggested moving to a 19 pitch prop. Should I consider the Mercury Enertia or Mirageplus? Or just go with a Yamaha Stainless? I will use the boat to cruise, and wake board. Low speed trolling isnt a priority. Anyone have any performance stats on a Outrage 22 with an F225 with various props? Ideally would prefer a bit more top end. Thanks in advance.

I have a Dauntless 22' with the same motor. I have the mirage prop (came with it) and it runs great. You can go wrong staying with factory recommendations, but I do like mine. Great out the hole and runs 50s full tank and 4 people. I never checked the pitch.

With the exception of new Boston Whaler boats, propellers do not come with engines. They are sold separately by dealers. Often the selection and size offered is not appropriate to the boat.

Remember that propeller performance and sizing is not identical across brands.

A Yamaha x by 17" will not necessarily perform the same as a Mercury x by 17" since the blade design is different.

I recall the WOT range for that motor is 5500-6000. You are underpropped if hitting 6300. You want to be in the WOT range with your typical load; people, gear, fuel. You want to move UP in size.

For your model and engine, a Yamaha Saltwater Series 17" or 19" is recommended by other Whaler owners. Estimated WOT speed is ~ 48 mph.

I have read that the F225 is not regarded as a "strong" 225 motor.

If you try a Mercury or other brand, it may take a few tries with different props. Find a dealer that will lend you a prop for testing.

You do not want an aluminum prop, a painted or polished stainless steel is the way to go.

I would say you definitely want a Mercury Enertia prop for your boat. We have several reports of other 22 owners using this prop with great results, I am running a counter rotating pair on my Outrage 25 and they are FANTASTIC, with incredible performance and no hull instability at high speeds.

From everything I have been able to determine over the years, and as Phil indicated, assume that engine is really putting about 215 HP. I am not familiar with gear ratios and RPM limit, so cannot recommend a specific pitch, but I would try using the Mercury propeller calculator on thier website.

Most 22's run around 46-50mph with a 200-225 on them.

Phil, one thing to keep in mind is that here on the internet you'll often encounter relentless shills, for whom the answer to any question about what to buy is always one particular brand name.

The motor manufacturer's self-branded props are often excellent, but they are really, really pricey. It's not unusual to find an aftermarket prop of equivalent or better quality for half the price or less.

For example, you may wish to look at Stiletto props on the dansdiscountprops website. A Stiletto Advantage II for your motor can be had for $289 plus shipping - that includes the prop itself and the hubkit to fit it to the motor. I can't tell you if that's the optimal prop, or whether you should go for the 17 or 19 pitch, but I would guess one or the other will work fine for you. At 6300 RPM with your existing prop, you're hitting the motor's rev limiter, which is good or else you'd be blowing the motor.

In your situation, I'd be inclined to try the 19-pitch - you've got a long way to go to 48 mph. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies thus far. Im certainly intrigued by the Enertia, as the Mercury website predicts 8 mph gain with their 19 pitch prop. Elsewhere on the internet, folks seem to praise powertech props, but I know very little about them. That said they are about $400, instead of 600....Anyone run a powertech prop? If not, I'll likely try an Enertia.

Just so you know, the recommendation I cited for the prop brand and size came from a well respected whaler prop "guru" and seconded by other Outrage 22 owners with the F225 engine.
