Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: 21' Outrage Fuel Tank help

Good morning, all.

The good news is that my new 1972 21' Outrage dosen't have water in the tank. :p The bad news is that it doesn't have a tank. :(

The good news is that my father has a friend that does aluminum fab work and will build me a tank. :p The bad news is that I don't have the dimensions.

Obviously, I could buy a new tank but I want to save those dollars for other stuff if possible.

Does anyone have them or at least a good photos that they could share?

I have decided that this is officially a project boat. I have the boat at a good Mercury mechanic now so he can check out and service the engine. Once he finishes, the work begins. Over all the boat is solid and has all the trim but is in need of wiring, paint, and as mentioned a good fuel tank. I will post "before photos" in a couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance for any help on the tank.

Well, I contacted Florida Marine Tanks and they indicated that they did not start making Boston Whaler Tanks until 1974 and they would need the dimensions in order to make the tank. :(

I am making a shot in the dark and e-mailed Boston Whaler to see if they will send me the dimensions and drawing. I don't hold much hope for this as they will want to refer me to their local dealer to make a sell. I will wait and see.

My last straw will be to do the measurements of the tank cavity and take a wag at building a tank.

Everyone have a great day.

Do you get to the Naples area at all? I have two above deck/corner tanks that came out of a 72 21 Outrage that won't fit my 1978 21', I'd let them go for what i have in them $100. Or trade for who knows what? I'm easy to work with

I had a tank made for my 21 (1972) last year. Here is the drawing that I prepared to give to the fabricator.

Bill (outbound44), I can't see any images. Please post again. I'm sure this is exactly what I need to build the tank. Many thanks.

Bob, thanks for the offer but I really want the tank out of sight. My wife was in Naples all weekend and she goes there on buisness about once a month. Maybe next time she goes, I will tag along and we can go for lunch or something and talk about boats. Hopefully by then I will have my camera back and can post some photos of my boat.

Does your 72 have the central hull cavity but the tank is missing? or are you thinking of creating a central hull cavity and retro fitting a belly tank for it? I will be pulling the tank on my 78 21 rev/rage project here soon, i can take pics and get you dimensions from that if you'd like? and by all means let me know when you'll be in town and we can grab a grouper sandwhich or something.

Bob, yes it has the original tank cavity that is covered by a long piece of decking that starts just behind the center console and runs to the back of the boat. The original owner, which lives just up the road from you in Ruskin, said he had replaced the origianal tank with a steel tank and of course in salt water ... that didn't last long. Unfortunately, he threw the old tank away a few years back. I suspect that is why he stopped using the boat. I will post pictures of the cavity when I get the boat back from the machanic and camera back from my daughter.

I send Bill and e-mail and hopefully he will be able to send me the drawings. If not, the picture and dimensions would be greatly appreciated.

I will ask my wife tonight when she has another trip planned for Naples and I will let you know. Since it is a pretty good drive she normally spends a couple of days and the grouper sandwich sounds good ... my treat. Have a great day.

Bob,

I just received an excellent tank drawing from Bill. I will get it to the fab shop and my tank problem will be over.

I ran across an excellent article the other day about installing an aluminum tank so they don't go bad and I will post it after I find it again.

Tons of thanks to both of you. Ron

Just FYI. I got an e-mail back from Boston Whaler. They indicated that they don't have the fuel tank design drawings for the 70's BW any longer and suggested checking with Florida Marine Tanks. I have already done that and they indicated that they didn't start making BW tanks until 1974.

So ... double thanks to Bill for the drawing of the fuel tank!! I don't have my boat back from the mechanic yet but the cover is at home and based on the cover layout, it appears the drawing will work for my 72.
