When you order parts for your motor, they want model number, serial number, manufacturer, and year from the motor tag. They also give you a choice of several models that has another number you are to choose that might end in a DX or DY, etc.

Where do you find this number on your motor? Just want to make sure I get the correct parts.

My motor is a Mercury 90 HP, model ELPT, four stroke, serial number 1B102580

Crawl over the whole motor and record any number/casting stamp/etc... you find. Even partial numbers help if there is scratching on the ID tag. Call the manufacturer and see if it is good enough. If not they usually can tell you where the information should be located. They hide them pretty good sometimes.

You don't necessarily need the exact and total model number for Mercury outboards because they tend to be classified by serial number first and foremost. Here are all the parts for your motor:

Mercurys have a small placard on the transom bracket with the model number and serial number stamped into it. The serial number can also be fond on the powerhead itself, usually stamped into a freeze plug.

Other manufactures use different protocols to distinguish their different motors and there is usually guidance on deciphering those numbers.

Here is another excellent source for outboard engine parts, all brands. For my Mercury applications, this site has more complete and detailed information than boats.net - such as cylinder block part numbers.
