my 87 outrage 20 has limited steering to one side. the motor swings freely and is not frozen. The tech at the boatyard says the steering box needs to be replaced. How hard is this job?

The Helm?

It is very easy.
Do you have a single cable, dual cable, or Hydraulic steering?

You most likely have a Teleflex steering system. Let us know which one from above...

It could be just the cable if that's what you have.

Let us know and we can tell you more.

I just replaced the helm and cable on my '82 Montauk last week. It was very easy (with proper tools ) I had to enlarge the hole in the console to fit the new helm ( Teleflex NFB rotary ) . Took a 16' cable and I put a hose clamp around helm end of cable to stop the safety pin from popping out on hard turns.

Dealer looked at it and said that the "cylinder" was shot instead. I am assuming this is a steering part on the motor but unsure why it would swing at all if that was the case.
