Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Deceptive Whaler Ads

It is not uncommon for me to see ads posted in general boating forums listing Whalers for sale with the incorrect model identified, or some other incorrect info. Sometimes when I write a friendly note to let them know of the error, referencing the 'Whaler Models and Specs' page here, they are appreciative for the correction and will fix their ad.

But I've had others write back and basically tell me to mind my own business, and others simply ignore me and leave the incorrect ad.

The most recent one was a guy selling a 1985 15' "Montauk". It is obviously some variation of a Sport, which I pointed out. The guy has since updated his ad with additional info on the motor, but didn't bother to correct the model I.D.

Sometimes I've thought about posting publically on their thread with the correct info. But have not ever done so yet.

I just don't think it's fair for someone to believe they are are buying something, when they are not.
I guess buyer beware applies here, if you are not astute enough to do a little research before you purchase.

Do you ever see this and what do you do?

I see this regularly as well. I've offered friendly emails at times, but most don't seem to care, or will send a snotty email in return, confirming their certainty of the (incorrect!) model name...so I no longer bother.

If the boat is offered on a public forum I believe it is appropriate and helpful to the public to point out incorrect information. A little tact never hurts.

Shooting Messengers is a full time job in this country.
Though you would try to save them time and money, you will get shot in most cases.

A friend rode out a hurricane on his boat in the marina. During the storm, he secured several, some he believes would have been destroyed. Not one thanks and two almost complained that he cost them insurance money.

There are some good people out there and you must be one of them!

Good Luck!
