Going to go look at a 17 ' Montauk that is powered by a 1995 88 hp Evinrude outboard. Anything specific to look at regarding the motor ? I know this is a VRO engine do most folks disable that ? Are these considered good/reliable engines ? I'm assuming that is plenty of power to push the 17 ' hull ?

If it is an 88 hp motor it probably doesn't have VRO as these were sold as a budget outboard. Same outboard as the 90 hp without VRO. Good basic outboard.

Even better if it doesn't have VRO. I like the keep it simple stupid principle. If it has trim/tilt I'll be happy.

Anyone in their right mind would not disable the VRO just because.
That's like disabling your Power Brakes or Power Steering in your vehicle because something "might" happen to it.
However, if someone can't afford to fix or replace the VRO pump, then that could be another story.
Those motors are basically bullet proof.
Let us know what your final decision is.

The 88 SPL was a pretty bullet-proof motor.
Do not dawdle when deciding to buy a good used Whaler. Good ones do not last more than a few days and if you found a used Whaler that has been sitting on the market for a while with little interest, there's a reason and you probably do not want it.
