I have a Montauk 170 in a marina in South Carolina. I have not trailered it much but I'm going to take it to Florida this winter and to Wisconsin next summer. It has a Merc 90. Is the little clip on the motor adequate to hold the motor in place or should I use a support bracket?
Any recommendations?

Not according to Mercury (or Yamaha). There are a number of things on the market. I used this on my Montauk 170:

Some folks use a piece of 2X4 or 2X6.

The bracket is a support bracket for working on the motor and is not designed for trailering.

While I used a 2x4" board, notched and secured with rope to the stern eyes for support on long trips, I highly recommend a my-wedge. If you use the support bracket for trailering, it will most likely bend and cause serious problems, possibly cause the motor to lower and damage the lower unit.

While there is a lot of differing opinions, I personally, do not like the support brackets that attach to the trailer and the engine.

While towing my Montauk with a Yamaha 90 from Florida to Michigan I used a Lock-N-Haul. It kept coming off as the device is held in place by the weight of the engine leaning on it but every little bounce would cause it to fall out and hang by the safety wire. In retrospect I should have listened to the consensus here and tied in a piece of 2x4.
