After doing a little boating with my old 1983 Johnson on my 1979 Montauk that I got a couple months ago I decided that I would feel better with a new engine when I am off the coast of Northern CA abalone diving and spearfishing. I am having a 90hp LP direct inject Tahatsu put on the boat this week. It will replace my 1983 Johnson 115 that smokes, chokes and drips oil. The old V-4 was nice back in the day but I am looking forward to the new engine. I will post a couple of pics when it is all done in a week or two. I think this engine will be perfect, just about 35 pounds more than the Johnson, still a 2 stroke, but clean and Tahoe legal, as well as being about 2k less than an E-TEC. Tahatsu makes some clean simple engines that are used in some far off places around the world.

How do you like the Tohatsu? It seems to be a popular option currently. Do you find 90 HP is sufficient for a 17? Thanks

You will love the new 90 hp Tohatsu. I have run a 90 Tohatsu on my 1977 Outrage 21 for 6 or 7 seasons now. I make around 100 trips out of the harbor a year. Im scared to check how many hours are on it. It has never been to the dealer. I replaced the spark plugs and waterpump impeller once and change the gear oil in the fall, Thats it. Someday it's gonna go "boom" and then maybee I will get the 115.

That is a good looking engine, with nice design lines. I like the looks of it a lot better than the glitzy and contrived shapes on the Evinrude E-tec 90. The mid section is not covered in plastic either. It uses Mercury Optimax technology, all licensed by Orbital in Australia, and should give excellent fuel economy.

Got my boat back and just need a half day free to get it out on the water. I am very happy with the rigging, and even upgraded the fuel tank, made a few changes to the helm and cleaned a few things up. Just needs gas and a few free hours and I am gone. Put new pics on my personal page of the engine and parts upgrade.

The engine looks good on the Montauk. Is the color dark blue or black?

Black. I thought I was going to get a Tahatsu, but not a problem, same engine just a sticker. It looks good and is a no frills engine without a lot of crazy plastic parts all over it.

Got the boat out today for the first time with the new engine. Runs great. After a few hours of break in I was able to do a couple wide open runs. Hitting 40 mph with a 19 pitch prop and 5500 rpm, so with a light load, 10 gallons of gas, one person, one battery and one yellow lab, I am propped right.(5100-5800) is the range. I was thinking that I would see closer to 42 or 44mph, but I did mover from a 115hp old school 2 stroke to a modern day 90hp. Boat runs great, direct inject 2 stroke is quiet and starts right up. A little bit of prop vibration at a couple RPM levels but other than that the Nissan is a nice simple engine, no smoke, nice on gas, and looks good.

Mount the engine up two bolt holes and install a 19" pitch Mercury Laser II prop and you should get your 42-44 MPH.
