When I bought my boat (1976 Montauk) and motor a couple of years ago, the compression was 105, 105, 105, 105. Last December, and again recently it was measured at 94, 105, 105, 105. I understand that the no. 1 cylinder should be within 10 percent but I was contemplating selling the boat, and some potential buyers are concerned about the numbers (as I am too).

Someone suggested Ring Free might help. Any suggestions as to whether this would work or not, or any other alternatives anyone may have?

Performance is still good, the motor sounds good, and she tops out about 34 mph, so I don't think its a performance issue, just a potential for problems down the road.

Comments?

Another "stupid" question.

Someone asked me if the motor had an alternator which would charge the battery while its running. I assumed it didn't as I've always had a trickle charger on it. Would a motor that old have had an alternator?

Thanks.

Evinrude Engine Tuner. If you do a web search you'll find all sorts of advice on how to use it. It can be a pain and a bit messy but if the rings are sticking it will solve the problem.
