I am picking up a 1976 17' sport from a friend who has kept it in very good shape complete with canvas, bimini, trailer but alas NO engine. My guess is that I should be looking for a 90hp engine and given the price of brand new engines $7,500 to $9,000 would like to find a 4 to 6 year old model in good shape. I like the idea of the lower weight of the Evinrude E-Tec but are open to any good engine. Would welcome any suggestions as to 1. Where to find a good quality used engine 2. The appropriate HP? 3. plans or kits to upgrade the fuel tanks, electrical, batteries etc.

Here would be your choices for new motors.

Several members have gone with the Yamaha F70 or an E-Tec 75 if you don't want to go for a 90.

Thanks Joe, I think I am going to go with an E-Tec 90.

Nerfus, a good alternative is the Suzuki DF90A 2009 or later which also has timing chain(no change needed) instead of timing belt (which is common on moste 4-stroke)
Weight is only 341 lbs.
Earlier models before 2009 I think was heavier though.

I was out with a tarpon guide in FL a few weeks back and he was running a new Suzuki DF90 on his hells bay flats boat and I was very impressed by the motor and the guides run motors hard.
Im a big fan of the new yamaha F70, but they are harder to find used since they are a newer engine. The same is probably true for the newer DF90.
