Can you identify the location of this photo?

There is something unique about this Whaler as well. The modification is plainly visible in the photo. Can you spot it?

Good luck, and have fun!

Joe -

I'm going to pm you a photo. I've downsized it (too small now) to 27kb...but it still won't go up.

Right now, it can be viewed on my personal page at the bottom...it uploaded there.

I'll try to upsize that photo to 97KB in a minute...

Okay...not sure why my photo turned out so blurry...the high res version is clear.

Can you spot the BOTTOM PAINT on that Whaler?

Neither can I...but it's there.

Hint on the location - it is very nearby the birthplace of a very classic (and classy) boat manufacturer with a storied history and quality product today...

Nope...not Nantucket....

...and not Martha's Vinyard. Good guesses though...those towns come to mind when looking at the photo.

Another hint: I've traveled all over the country taking photos of Whalers....

I'da guessed edgewater, but thats cuz whalers were made there. Not sure where the birthplace of whaler is.

Another hint: This is one of the earliest settled areas of the United States. In fact, Europeans transited this water far before the Declaration of Independence was drafted, and the area has a rich, diverse and proud history.

Many people consider it a vacation area, however, most people in the United States have a completely different (and incorrect) opinion of it.

If it's not guessed by then, I'll give you the answer tomorrow.

Jamestown?

My guess would be North Carolina, someplace around Roanoke Island. The first English settlement was here well before Jamestown.
Not sure but it looks like the Bow rails are shorter than standard?

Holland, MI? It is on the shores of Lake Michigan, settled by the Dutch, home to Tiara Yachts and less than 3 hours from Chicago (Buckda) and Detroit (Jeff).

Good guesses by all.

Jerry M is closest.

The location is Harsen's Island at the mouth of the St. Clair River as it flows from Lake Huron into Lake St. Clair just outside of Detroit.

The nearest town is Algonac, Michigan. Algonac is the birthplace of Chris-Craft boats, another legendary boat company.

The Great Lakes were settled early in the European History of North America, and for a very long time, cities like Sault Ste. Marie, and Duluth, MN represented the farthest westward settlements on the continent as trappers, traders, miners and lumber brought Europeans to the shores of what is now Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota...and of course, Ontario, Canada.

Michigan is often dissed in the media (movies, TV, etc) for the decline of the Automotive industry in America - and somehow gets a bad rap, but even 30 minutes from Detroit, beautiful scenes such as the one above can be found. Farther out from Detroit, the state becomes even more scenic....and that crystal clear blue freshwater - more freshwater coastline than any other state...well, it can't be beat (rivaled, maybe).

Come on up sometime and find out why we love this state so much! Let's go boating!

The boat pictured is moderator Jeff's 22' Outrage "Hells Bells" and the modification(s) featured are a new stern seat (not really visible in this photo) and BOTTOM PAINT - clearly visible in the photo, but the color match is nearly perfect as to render the appearance of a clean bottomed hull.

Thanks for participating!

Dave

That area of where the St Clair River splits into the North, Middle, and South Channel and then dumps in lake St Clair is one of the coolest places to boat in the Metro Detroit Area. You have everything from vast open shallow flats to deep water channels with freighter traffic. Some areas of the Middle Channel and the Bassett channel look and feel like backwater Bayou's and tall grass lined rivers in the middle of a marsh. And of course some of the homes in this area are great to look at as well. The ones in the picture are my favorite and are located at the end of the South Channel on Harsen's Island and they look out over Seaway and Gull Islands.

Cool stuff Buckda, I'm in St. Clair Shores MI right now and will be visiting my aunt in Algonac this week as well.
You are right, MI does get a bad rap. The great lakes are beautiful. I grew up in St. Clair Shores and have been all over this state. The U.P. is cool too. B)
I expect Detroit will recover some day, but it has been a long and painful road so far.
