With a 40hp engine on a 13 whaler, what is the best position to put the engine for towing? I read that down is best if you have clearance, but wouldn't having it up center the weight over the transom better? Or would placing a block of wood or dowel to support the engine and not the locking mechanism be best? Engine is a 90s Tohatsu 40 2 stk. My larger motors have built in trailering locks that put it around 1/2 way or so take the weight off the hydraulics, this motor does not have that feature.

In all three of my owners manuals (50hp 4 stroke Yamaha, 25hp 4 stroke Merc, 90hp 4 stroke Merc), they all say to trailer with the motor down if you have clearance. Trailer with the motor up if you don't. Don't rely on the hydraulics or locking lever to keep the motor up.
The low dollar way to keep the motor up is a 2X4 or 2X6. There are other alternatives that cost more.

I one of those transom savers, it puts the engine weight on the trailer. But down is the best if you have the clearance.
