Hello, I've been tossing around the idea of re-powering my 1989 15'. I currently have a 2008 Yamaha 70 two stroke and have been looking at the 90 etec because Yamaha doesn't have the 90 in their line up anymore. My question is has anyone powered their 15 with this outboard? I'm just nervous about the weight of it, 320lbs is kind of a lot. What are your thoughts?

The 15' models are rated for max hp of 70.

However, if you choose to overpower your 15' model, then Yamaha still sells the F90 @366 pounds.

My recommendation for people wanting 70 hp for 15' models is the Yamaha F70 @257 pounds

You can compare the weights here in our article:

Also, let us know what model 15' Whaler you have. That info is on the left sidebar under "Whaler Models and Specs".

I'm not worried about over powering my 15 with a 90. Everyone here in Sitka ak puts 85's and 90 two stroke yamies on their 15's it's not unusual to see here. My question is weight. The 90 two stroke Yamaha weighs 290..? I'm pretty sure and the etec 90 is up to 320. I'm just worried that will be too heavy to be hanging off the back of the boat. But was hoping somebody has done it and can tell me how it worked out for them. I don't want to dish out 10k for something that won't work in my favor.

You have to worry about stability in addition to excessive power. I know people have greatly overpowered their whalers but just because someone else does it doesn't mean it's not a foolish thing to do. As for the difference between the Yamaha 4 stroke 90 and the F70, it it my understanding that there is only a 2 to 3 miles per hour difference on a Montauk 17 so I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be much difference on a 15 foot hull either.
