I picked up another project less than a mile from my house last week. Sitting in someones back yard was a 1967 Nauset. Of course it is in very bad shape and was sporting a 1967 Homelite Grand Prix 4 cycle 55hp. DId a little research and found out that Boston Whaler owned this company in 1966. Just wanted to know if anyone has dealt with these older engines and are they worth messing with? Very cool looking just haven't seen to many around . The gentleman was the original owner .Purchase price in 1967 was 3950.00 also he gave me all the original pamphlets on the boat. very cool old pics. Thanks BG

One of the 1st 4 strokes on the market, just think you will have problems finding parts. I would go for a new engine, its no fun being broken down when you want to use the boat...

Those motors bring back memories. Back around 1967 I worked at an Evinrude and Homelite motor dealership that sold Boston Whalers. I even applied to the Fisher-Pierce Corporation to be a regional service rep for the brand and was interviewed by Dick Fisher himself. Unfortunately I did not get the position and used to have the signed letter from Mr. Fisher telling me that bad news.

On a 17' Whaler the Evinrude 40hp twin ran the same speed as the 55hp Homelite.

My dad bought our first whaler in 1969 and got the 55 Bearcat on it. It was quiet and good on gas, but boy, was it a dog. When my sister and I were small(er) the Bearcat would pull us up on skis just fine. As we got older, we definitely needed more HP so my dad re-powered with a 115 Merc (Tower of Power). HUGE difference.

Not so far from you, in Buford Ga, there's a guy who has 60 or so vintage outboards that he's restored. I'm sure he could be of some help to you. If you'd like his contact info please drop me a PM.
