I have a 1985 Yamaha 90 hp on a 1985 Montuak. I was out today and cruising along nicely when the motor sputtered and stopped. It sounded like it ran out of gas. This happened before on my other whaler so I unscrewed the fuel tank cap and it seemed to suck in a bunch of air. I had the cap on too tight. So I gave the hose a few pumps, it seemed fix the problem as I was able to fire up fairly quickly and I was on my way again this time with the air vent open. The motor stopped 2 more times and I kept on having to pump the hose to get gas flowing. I made it back to the dock but now I am a bit nervous to take the boat out again for fear I will get stuck. Any ideas what is going on here? the motor is running great it just seams there is something up with the tank or hose or both. I am not a mechanic so any help is appreciated. Thanks, Sean

You need to have a vented cap, also your fuel pump bulb could be bad, replace the bulb with only a factory primer bulb, The other problem is your fuel pickup could be clogged, but I think it is the primer bulb....

If the vent is open and the motor only runs with you squeezing the primer bulb, your fuel lift pump is the problem.

What can I expect to pay for a fuel lift pump and labor? I am taking the boat out tomorrow minus my dogs to see if I cant figure it out. Is there any tell tail signs that the fuel lift pump is bad? thx

Well if the primer bulb is empty when the engine dies, it means there's an air leak somewhere. Depending on the age of the line, best to replace everything including the connectors. As Contender says, go with OEM only as quality is far better than aftermarket.
If the bulb is full and starts when you squeeze it, more likely the lift pump is the culprit.

I am not sure about a Yamaha 90, but fuel pumps are pretty simple. I just rebuilt a fuel pump for an OMC motor of that vintage and the rebuild kit was about $30. You need only a screwdriver.

Does this Yamaha have Oil Injection ?
I don't know Yamaha but you need a VRO pump for an Evinrude instead of just a straight Fuel pump if you want to keep the VRO.

If you have a spare remote tank or can borrow one it would allow you to eliminate tank,bulb and fuel line very easily. You could even buy a 6 gallon with hose and bulb and then you would always have a spare.

Well I just took the boat out and same problem. I had to squeeze the fuel bulb the whole time just to get back to the dock. I am at a dry slip so I think I am going to do all of the above come tuesday. The motor is not oil injected. I am going to replace the fuel pump and hose since I have no idea how old they are. I replaced the impeller last month for the same reason and it blew me away the difference in water flow coming from the engine. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Just installed new fuel lift pump (took 5 minutes) and she is running like a dream. Thanks Tom!
