I have a 1988 montauk 17' with a 2003 Yamaha 130hp that I purchased from a friend of mine about 6 months ago. The boat rides great and has plenty of power but it seems to use quite a bit more fuel than I expected. I am considering selling the 130 and putting a used Yamaha f90 on it to save on fuel. My only concern is that we primarily use the boat to take the kids tubing and want to make sure that the 90 four stroke has enough power to carry 3 people on the boat while pulling 3 more on the tube.
If anyone has this set up I would like to hear your thoughts and your performance numbers.
Thanks in advance,
Danny

A F90 will be a good choice. Then again, any brand modern 90hp engine will be good.
For you intended use, your performance will depend on
-load and position in the boat.
-mounting height of motor
-proper propeller size and pitch
You don't say:
-how fast you want to go with three adults and three kids on a tube.
-how heavy are the adults in the boat.
-how heavy are the kids on the tube.
-how large and what is the shape of the tube?
To provide specific answers, we need specific information.

Phil T,
It's normally myself 200lbs my 10 yr old son 75lbs and my twin 13yr old daughters 100lbs each that go out on the boat. Sometimes we'll pull 2 other teenagers on a tube about 140lbs each. I think the F90 has the power to handle it just trying to confirm that with anyone with that setup. I see you used to own a 17' montauk with a 90 two smoker, what were your performance numbers with a average load? Top speed, and fuel burn.
Thanks,
Danny
