I was up in portland on saturday morning taking in a nav training seminar about casco bay....afterwards, i was thinking about how you live up there and frequent those waters. Do you have a favorite place to put in ? Is one place better than the other ? Is there safe parking near the ramp(s) . Any inf o you could share would be helpful. I may want to explore the area someting this season,. Thanks for your valuable info, regards, bob

Water access is very straight forward.
There are two boat ramps that access the inner harbor, Portland and South Portland. There are additional ramps north and south of Portland.
Portland:

Fee is $10 and overnight parking is available.
South Portland:

My personal preference is South Portland (1 mile from my house) since it is less busy and tends to not overfill unless it is a holiday weekend.
The South Portland ramp is
outside the harbor no-wake zone and is exposed to nasty ship wakes. The Portland ramp is around the peninsula and not subject to them.
What additional information can I help with?

Phil, thank you very much for the info. They mentioned these ramps during class, however not in the detail which you provide. Thanks for the specifics..very handy..Bob

Bob,
To add to what Phil said, Portland Harbor is really busy with commercial traffic. I was looking at going to the lobster boat
races by boat, from N.Mass to Harpswell, with a fuel stop in Portland.
From what I read, they said crossing from a slip in South Portland to the old port section (say, via dingy) was analogous to crossing the street in Time Square.
