Is 70 HP adequate for the 17' Montauk, 1985 to 2001?

I had a 70hp Evinrude on my Montauk which I owned for 15 years.
It was just fine.
There were only a couple of times in smooth water that I wished I had a 90 but then I would have had to pay the price.

70 HP is fully twice the minimum horsepower rating for the classic Montauk, so yes, I think it is actually more than adequate.

70 HP is also adequate for the 1973-1985 17' Montauk.

I owned a 1980 Montauk with a 1985 Johnson 70 HP and it was more than adequate...but I still repowered it with a 1986 Jonson 90. The 90 was more fun.
