I plan to re power my 1985 Montauk 17 but do not see any engine restrictions in the manual, and the capacity plate is unreadable It has a 85 Johnson 60hp now. The option I was thinking about was a new Evenrude E-Tec 90hp. Does anyone know the weight or hp restrictions?

We have an article in the article section on the choices you seek.

We also have the model information for most Whalers in the Model/Year index section.

Click on the Montauk and you will see that it is rated for a max of 100 HP....

Seaten,

Thanks for the compliments. All the members here make this site what it is...

The E-Tec 90 is a perfect match for the Classic Montauk.
Here is one member that has had the E-Tec 90 on the back of his Montauk for quite sometime now.

I can't tell you what HP to get, but you cannot go wrong with the ETEC. I have had Yamahas, OMC, and Mercury and none compare. Power, noise, fuel economy and especially maintainance! You will not be sorry if you get one
