I bought a 1996 Johnson 115 over the weekend to put on my 16 custom. I know that the boat is supposed to be rated for 90hp but it seems it is common to be a little over with no problem. A buddy of mine wanted my 48 spl to go on a party barge he bought and there just so happened to be this 115 for sale locally and I got it for close to the price of my motor. A couple of questions:

-It has the red plug on the motor like my controls that a previous owner must have converted since 1995 should have been the last year for the red plug right? Are my old controls going to work? The ones that came with this motor were binnacle and I needed to keep my side mount controls. I read somewhere that this motor has electric choke and my controls just push in the key to choke.
-I plan to have a guy I know with an engine hoist swap our motors out this weekend. We were able to turn it over and run compression but where we bought it from was in a guys barn on a hoist with no water to put it on ears and run it. We did manually shift it from forward through reverse several times to make sure the foot wasn't locked up. Does anyone have any advice on anything I should check or do? I am hoping its just going to crank and go but if anyone has any experience about things to check on this motor I would as always, appreciate the advice. It also has a stainless viper prop on it that is going to need to go to a prop shop to get fixed.

The controls should work but may need an adapter for the wiring.

Without seeing your wiring harness and control harness plug-ins, it is hard to tell exactly what you are dealing with.

See this article on changing or adapting the harness.
