I have a 1970 Katama. It came with a 100 hp Evinrude, which
I have sold due to some of the issues with motor. I am
Looking for a new motor. I found a 1998 Johnson 60 hp with
Prop and controls for a great deal. The motors in excellent
Condition and the price is low. I know it wont get me
To 37 mph like the 100 hp. Anyone know how fast a 60 hp
Will make a classic hull go? I also found a
70 hp, but its twice te price with no prop and no controls.

The Evinrude was a 1989. Bad compression, bad carbs, etc.
The 60 hp Im looking at is about 60-70 pounds lighter.

I went through the personal pages. There are a few 16.5 classics with 60 hp motors. Any of those owners want to offer their comments?

I owned a 1973 Katama from 2002-2007. I had a 2002 BRP 50 hp two stroke on the Katama. The boat got on plane at 16 mph and had a top speed of 24 mph (with 2 people). The boat was configured with sufficient hp, but not too much power in the hands of a teenager. The kids used it to tube and waterski. Yes, the boat was slow, but it served my family well for 5 summers of heavy use.

The 1998 Johnson 60 was simply a slightly de-tuned version of the venerable three cylinder OMC 70, a great motor.

On a Katama, I would expect a top speed of about 35 MPH and enough acceleration to pull a slalom skier out of the water.

Like the 70, the 60 has a 5000-6000 RPM range and a 2.42:1 gear ratio. To hit 35 MPH you would want a 13 inch-ish pitch propeller.

The motor should be mounted as high on the transom as possible if using modern stainless steel propeller.
